Thin Veil
In September, I wrote a few organizations
asking if they gave out grants for a hearing device we were hoping to purchase
for our daughter June. June wears hearing aids but there is still so much she
is unable to pick up on especially in classrooms or noisy places like restaurants.
At school, she has a device that hooks to her hearing aids that helps hear her
teacher’s voice and can also be hooked to a computer.
One man, named Phil, from the Lions Hearing
Center of Michigan took interest in our story. After hearing June’s need he
asked if June would be interested in coming to their fundraising gala in
November to speak with Miss Michigan 2014 (who also wears aids) on stage. There
they would ask the attendees to give towards getting June a new device. June
did a fabulous job speaking in front of 300 people and money was raised to help
supplement what we could pay. We were so proud and grateful!
The next weekend a few of our friends were over and during that time we prayed for our friend,
Roger DeMeyere. Roger has been a long time friend of ours and has
struggled with lung cancer. Our friend, Kate, texted me later and said that
during our prayer she kept hearing the word “phone.” Sounds hokey but I don't care. She wasn’t sure if that
meant anything but I encouraged Greg to call Roger. Greg caught Roger going up
to one of his favorite places in the U.P. and they had a great conversation.
Greg said it was so great to hear his voice!

The day before Thanksgiving I saw on Roger’s
daughter’s FB page that Roger was in the hospital so I messaged her to ask if
we could come visit. Thanksgiving morning she messaged me to let us know he had
passed away due to complications of pneumonia. Roger was the kind of person who
understood you. You could tell him anything and he wouldn’t be shocked by it
and his perspective always seemed to be filled with the positive. Roger’s
parents were Deaf and I always enjoyed the fun stories he told about them.
Roger also dedicated his life to children with special needs, in particular,
those who struggled with hearing loss.

On December 18th, June received her hearing
device. This device is so amazing! She can hear her ice skating teacher clearer
now, the tv and computer! And, here’s one of the coolest parts, the device is
called a ROGER Pen! Roger is still with us in our hearts and now we are
encouraged by his spirit whenever we think of June’s Roger device.
May
you not be shy in asking God for your needs. May you be encouraged by His
spirit when He shows up. May you realize and understand the thin veil between
this life and the next.
